So, writing about a song gets it out of my head, but makes way for another one… so here’s the one stuck in my head now, and I guess that means when people ask me what kind of music I like, I’m going to have to stop saying I’ll listen to anything but country. Ah well. At least he’s “new country” so it isn’t quite the same, right?
But seriously, I think I need to get this album, I love this song. I guess it has the potential to be depressing, but if you think about it, people do change how they live and act when they find out they’re dying. But why should we wait to get life-changing news when we should live each day with meaning, so we can say that “I loved deeper, and I spoke sweeter, and I gave forgiveness I’d been denying,” and while you’re at it, wouldn’t it be cool to say, “I went skydiving, I went Rocky Mountian climbing…” Don’t go bull-riding though, it’ll just mess up your back
So, go ahead, live like you’re dying.

I was asked to sing this song for a memorial service. Steve was 40 years old when he passed away from cancer and in the last months of his life this song really spoke to him and his family. It was the first (and last?) time I ever sang the words “a bull named FuManchu” in church. I will never forget the powerful way in which people responded to the song. I’m not a huge country music fan, but every once in a while country music has a way of getting down to the essentials of life and this song really does that.

My father had a talk with me right before high school graduation. He straight out told me that you have one life to live and don’t be afraid of walking through heaven’s gates one day all worn out with a bad limp. I took his advice and now that I am thirty, I’ve lived the life of every boy’s dream. I have many scars to show for it and a million stories to tell to this day. My life has been a serious adventure thus far, and the best thing about it is I still have at least another thirty to go. I lived life like I was dying and don’t intend on slowing down. Take chances and wear out that body a little because when you’re old and gray, will you have stories to tell?
